Short Biography

  • Md. Sharafat Chowdhury is an environmental scientist and geospatial analyst specializing in GIS, remote sensing, climate change, disaster risk reduction, geostatistics, machine and deep learning, and environmental modelling. He is currently serving as a Lecturer in the Department of Environmental Science and Disaster Management at Gopalganj Science and Technology University (GSTU), Bangladesh. He completed his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Geography and Environment from Jahangirnagar University. His research focuses on the application of geospatial technologies and data-driven approaches to climate and environmental change, disaster risk assessment, land use/land cover dynamics, ecosystem assessment, and sustainable environmental management. Before joining GSTU, he served as a Lecturer at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh, Research Assistant at the Center for Sustainable Development, ULAB, Lead Researcher under the ICT Division of the Government of Bangladesh, and Research Associate under the Climate Trust Fund. He also served as Co-Principal Investigator of the CASMAR project on carbon sequestration through mangrove afforestation and restoration in Bangladesh. His research has been published in high-impact international journals including Scientific Reports (nature portfolio), Heliyon, Global Ecology and Conservation, Environmental Challenges, and MethodsX. He has also published two research methodology articles in MethodsX focusing on GIS- based land use/land cover mapping and hydrological modelling. His research on the Sundarbans was recognized by Elsevier for its linkage to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In addition to research and teaching, he has contributed to scholarly activities through professional training, and peer review of research manuscripts for international journals. He is also currently contributing to the review of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, further extending his engagement with international climate-change research and assessment.
